Jimmy Dabble

Author: Frans Vischer

We Love Jimmy Dabble!
I borrowed this book from the library for my son, and since then we haven't been able to put it down. I had to finish the book last night by myself because I couldn't wait to find out how it ended. This is a GREAT book, and I am seriously thinking about getting a copy for our home.

ADULTS WILL LOVE IT TOO!!
Yes, adults will love this as much as they loved reading HARRY POTTER. Get lost in your own childhood all over again. The illustrations could not be more charming. Here, unlike HARRY POTTER, you are able to easily visualize the characters. While POTTER is extremely visually written, JIMMY DABBLE is both visually written and perfectly illustrated. Get this today. You and your children will love this and crave more and more. Jimmy Dabble is born!

i loved jimmy dabble
i am 9 years old and i thought jimmy dabble was lots of fun, especially the way jimmy talks with the farm animals. jimmy's grandmother is great. she's so different from jimmy's parents and i really like her. and beebo was a real surprise. i'm going to bring the book to school and show it to my class. i want to be a writer when i'm older, and i'd love to be able to write like mr vischer. i hope there will be other jimmy dabble books, just like harry potter...

Life on a Horse Farm
A truly wonderful gift for any child interested in animals and how they live! I gave it to my grandchildren and only wish I would have had something similar for my children!

This is a great book!
LIFE ON A HORSE FARM is one of the most illustrative and interesting books on the market for young children. It features a family who takes care of and trains horses for the race track. Some interesting highlights of this book are
1. An illustrative look at the parts of the horse
2. A step by step look at the birth of a foal
3. Communication between horses
4. Health concerns when dealing with horses
5. Chores to be done in the barn
6. Special training for racehorses headed to the track

7. Fun facts about horses
8. Websites that will allow readers to learn more about horses
9. A glossary with unfamiliar horse terms defined
AND MUCH MORE!

I definetly reccomend this book. It is the best, most informative horse farm book on the market. Also be sure to check out other "Life on the Farm" books by Judy Wolfman.

Great for horse lovers
Kids who have never been near a horse will find this book of great interest. The photos and story go well together, as Sarah Mills (the girl who lives on the horse farm) tells about her life on the horse farm. These horses are bred for racing - lots of new material here. Any child will love it. (Adults too!)

Little Girl in a Red Dress With Cat and Dog
Published in Hardcover by Viking Childrens Books (February, 1998)
Authors: Nicholas B. A. Nicholson, Cynthia Von Buhler, and Cynthia Von Buhler
Average review score:

Imagination
This book is my favorite gift for a child. I have even bought copies for adults. It's a wonderful tool for showing a child the joy of imagination. The author tells a charming story about a little girl in a real painting. Could it be true? The illustrator, magically brings the painting to life. Not only does the little girl in the red dress pose with her cat and dog but she throws the dog a stick, she stirs the cooks's soup, she eats a cherry tart. In a very subtle way the book teaches a child to open their minds as well as their eyes. To search for more than what their eyes see. In the book, the little girl looks out a window, at a peaceful country scene below and waits for something exciting to happen. I wonder if she is looking down at us now. If she knows her picture hangs in a museum and that a delightful story has been written about her. I think she does.

Ce livre est une oeuvres d'art! A work of art!
J'adore ce livre! Un conte a charmant. Les illustrations sont tres belles! Elles devraient etre dans un musee! Ce livre est un grand accomplissement. Merci beaucoup! I adore this book. A charming story and beautiful illustrations. This book is a grand accomplishment! Thank you!

A charming story and museum quality illustrations!
This book is a work of art! A charming story of historical interest with museum quality illustrations! This book is the perfect introduction to fine art for a child. Everyone who sees this book falls in love with it ! It is a favorite of my daughter's and mine. Maybe someday I will dress my young daughter in a red dress and have an artist - preferably Cynthia von Buhler - paint her in the folk style of the book!

A Little Prairie House
Published in Paperback by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (June, 1999)
Authors: Laura Ingalls Wilder and Renee Graef
Average review score:

Adaptive book versions for "Little House".
The Series "My First Little House Books" is a great tool for Special Education adaptations of the Core Literature "Little House in the Big Woods". I've used this series in general education classrooms, too, to supplement the Core Lit text. The children's positive responses to the beautiful illustrations made my day! The beautifully portrayed color illustrations capture essential details from the book chapters and make the stories come alive for all of the students. Two thumbs up for this series!

A Little Prairie House (my first little house books)
I bought this book for my 1st grade daughter, hoping she would love the Laura Ingalls Wilder tradition as I had as a child. She did and I was excited because she could read this book herself and she was empowered! I only wish that you could buy the other 13 titles of the "first books" in a collection or gift set like you can the original series.

An Exceptional Series!
I ordered the whole series for my soon to be 4 year old for Christmas. She is absolutely delighted with the stories. The illustrations are beautiful. A must have for younger children.

Market Day: A Story Told with Folk Art
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Children's Books (01 May, 2000)
Author: Lois Ehlert
Average review score:

Beautiful folk art collage with a wonderful story!
Ms. Ehlert collects different types of handmade folk art from all over the world. In this collection, she has arranged items as varied as ice fishing decoys from the United States and beaded dolls from Africa to create a collage to illustrate this fun, colorful story.

It's market day, so let's feed the animals, pack up the veggies and the things to sell, and head on out to the market!! Along the way, we'll pass colorful birds and even snakes sunning themselves in the grass. We'll stay all day until the sun goes down and then head back home with all the wonderful things we've bought. Told in rhyme, "Market Day" is a colorful story with a lot of energy to it. A blue bull doll from Africa carries a giant carrot to market alongside a row of papier-mache turnips from the United States. A hand-carved cart with people from Mexico joins the procession, along with other art from Central America.

While she is perhaps best known for her illustration of the famous children's book, "Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom", Ms. Ehlert has written and illustrated many other books as well. All have her distinctive cut-paper or photograph style to them, but I would rank "Market Day" as one of my favorites by her. In a world where very FEW things are made by hand, "Market Day" is a welcome reminder of the fine art of everyday. Highly recommended!

Rhyming fun
My four-year-old daughter is fasinated by the simple rhyming text and bright folk art pictures of this book. I think younger children would likewise enjoy it. We also like to read all the countries of origin for the various folk art pieces at the back of the book.

Hooray! Hooray! For Market Day!
The pictures flow, As do the words. It's full of fish, And frogs, and birds. A trip to market, From a farm. And all and all There's lots of charm.

No, No, Titus
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (September, 1999)
Authors: Claire Masurel and Shari Halpern
Average review score:

Yes, yes, Mom, you will like this book!
This is my son's current favorite at 16 months old. Simple, repetitive story, with great illustrations. He likes the animal sounds and his favorite part is "Oh no!" shouted the farmer, "a fox!" read with overly exaggerated shock. I highly recommend this book...I read it at least twice a night!

Fun book for toddlers!
By 2 1/2 yr old son loves farms and tractors, and this farm dog book was no exception! Very humorous, cute illustrations, and a text your child can chime in with! "No, No Titus! Dogs don't lay eggs" and "No, No Titus! Dogs don't give milk!" Titus finally learns his place on the farm, as a wonderful watch dog. YAY!

Wonderful pictures with an entertaining story line
My almost 2 year old just LOVES this book. It is the first book he picked out by himself at the library, & he, of course, wants to read it over & over & over & over & over (well, you get the idea). The pictures are just perfect for the story & the story is just perfect if you're almost 2. It has lots of familar animals in it, & it is repetitive enough that he knows when to say "No, no, Titus!" (Which really makes your day if you're almost 2.) I wish you could see the pictures because they are really wonderful. I would recommend the book to anyone with small kids who like animals.

One Man's West
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1977)
Authors: David Sievert, Lavender and William A. Smith
Average review score:

A prolific writer
Mr. Lavender recently died (April '03)and his obituary in the Los Angeles Times prompted me to go out and buy this book. I could not put it down...just as the Times stated, Lavender is a wonderful writer who knows how to describe the west. This book has it all, mountains, mining, cowboys and history with a nice personal touch. I would recommend it highly. It is an "easy" read and one that will leave you feeling satisfied once you complete the book. I am going to search out more of Mr. Lavender's works.

I agree with you review...
An excellent book! Ranching and mining, rich history, not to be missed.

Great intimate narrative of life in western Colorado & Utah
David Lavender is a historian whose personal account of growing up in Telluride and Ouray, Colorado is captivating. Mr Lavender documents the arrival of the 1950's "modern age" to western Colorado and Utah. During his youth, the open desert and mountain lands evolve from a setting for silver mines, lone cowboys, and vast cattle ranches into the garden of the atomic age. He documents the arrival of uranium prospectors, the departure of independent cowboy spirits, and finally, the eventual return of the nuclear boom towns to dust. It is fascinating to read him today and to see what the southern Utah desert was like 50 years ago. If you visit these areas, I recommend that you read "One Man's West" as you pass through them. It will give significance to the sight of decaying farm or mining equipment by the roadside, and fill you with appreciation for those who make an effort to preserve the wilderness. I buy this book in multiple copies and give them to my friends. It has no particular bent for environmentalism or even "wise use" in the wilderness, but gives you some historical insight. I have never met Mr. Lavender, but I admire him as an author and historian. He has authored several other books incouding and account of the Lewis and Clark expedition which, I have heard, is quite good."One Man's West" was written in the 1940's then updated in the 1950's. The New York Times published a glowing review of the book in the mid 1940's or 1950's. Its age has only helped to enhance its significance to a contemporary reader of western history.

Queenie Farmer Had Fifteen Daughters
Published in Hardcover by Silver Whistle (01 May, 2002)
Authors: Ann Campbell and Holly Meade
Average review score:

One that you will read again and again
My daughter (4 yrs) and I first took this book out from the library. Since we kept renewing it, I decided to buy a copy for ourselves. The book sends a wonderful message about taking care of others but also taking care of yourself. This book can also teach counting as well as the days of the week. I can hear my daughter counting all the things that Queenie does for her daughters and herself when she reads it to herself and when we read it together she always wants to count everything. An excellent book for girls.

Good for Mom and Daugthers
My daugther and I checked this book out of the library on a whim. What a great book. While some of it is impossible (On the day Queenie gave birth to 15 daughters...), the story is very sweet. It shows that you can do really nice things for your family but at the same time be able to do things for yourself. What is really nice is that my daugther likes to count all the things that Queenie does for her daughters from making birthday cakes, to building beds, to planning weddings for all fifteen girls. However the best is for the end since Queenie always gave her daughters everything that she could, she finally can do what she wants.

Queenie Farmer had 15 Daughters
This is a wonderful book! The cadence and illustrations are fabulous!
